In 2015, the Italian stone industry exported nearly four million tons of natural stone to the rest of the world, recording a value that, for the first time since the advent of the euro, exceeded two billion euro. These are the numbers reported by the Internazionale Marmi e Macchine Carrara study and research department that, like every year, analyses and processes the ISTAT data on foreign trade for the Italian natural stone industry. The growth in value of 6.3% compared to 2014, despite a decline of 5% in quantity, testifies the significant increase in the average unit value of the products exported. In fact, in 2015 the average value of quality raw materials and finished products amounted to 665 euro per ton, showing an increase of 10% compared to 2014.

This was thanks to the boom in sales of finished marble products that today account for half of the total export value of the Italian stone industry. In 2015, Italy exported 915,000 tons of finished marble products to the rest of the world worth over one billion euro, thereby recording an increase of 2.6% in quantity and 9.8% in value compared to 2014. The value of exports of finished granite products is also increasing. This value rose from 534.6 million in 2014 to 562 million in 2015, that is by 5.1%. Overall, the value of Italian exports of finished products in 2015 amounted to 1,625,739,972 euro, showing a 7.7% increase compared to 2014. The leading national stone district in terms of exports was once again the Apuo-Versilian district with exports for a value of almost 536 million euro, up 11.4% compared to 2014. Moreover, if we consider total raw materials and finished products, the value of exports was estimated at 734.6 million euro for the Apuo-Versilian district, an increase of 9.5% compared to 2014.Exports for the Venetian district also increased by 10% for a total value of finished product exports of 523 million euro. Finally, of note is the increase in exports of travertine that, following a period of crisis, grew by 34% compared to 2014, with exports of finished products for a value of 40 million.

Italian exports of natural stone are driven by the US market demand . In 2015, Italy exported 238,000 tons of quality materials to the United States worth 462 million Euro, an increase compared to 2014 of 5.4% in quantity and as much as 24.5% in value, 72% thanks to finished marble product exports.“Carrara Marmotec 2016 has promoted, for this reason, the incoming of US buyers and contractors. A large number will be present at the trade fair due to take place from 18-21 May in Carrara to meet our companies. " said Fabio Felici – IMM-Carrarafiere Chairman. "Close collaboration with the Marble Institute of America and the ICE has led to the selection of the best US operators and architects invited by our trade fair to attend a B2B event organised in detail with an advanced matchmaking software."
